Events of 2014
After a general period of renovation and rest, the House reopened in January 2014. Students of the Balassi Institute studying Literary Translation (Sylwia Bogdanska, Ekaterina Ermakova, Owen Good, Katharina Karle, Franziska Maria Kübeck-Montenuovo, Klara Anna Marciniak, Michal Jan Marek-Mlot, Claudia Tatasciore, Xi Jiayou), worked on their translations necessary for earning their Master’s Degree, translating text of their own choosing. They were followed by individual translators, then the usual annual workshops began in February with the Estonian transaltors' seminar, (Reet Klettenberg, Leelo Jõulu, Kadri Pärtel, Berit Puidet, Kai Tiislär, Mariliis Peterson, lead by: Viktória Tóth and Janurik Boglárka), followed by the Austrian workshop (Emese Dallos, Zsuzsanna Gábor, Nóra Keszerice, Ágnes Nagy, Sandra Rétháti, Zita Ragoncza, lead by György Buda). Alumni of the Balassi Institute returned for a post graduate workshop (Poszt-MÜF-5) in early March (Avi Dekel, Viktorija Santic, Maja Urban, Daniel Warmuz, Liza Sochivko, Sevgi Can Yagci, Monica Fulda, Katerina Srubarová, lead by: Mónika Dánél, Péter Rácz). Péter Rácz traveled to Rome for the RECIT (European Literary Transaltor's Network) meeting of the year. In April the house hosted a Serbian workshop, (Sandra Buljanović,Sandra Mihajlović, Jelena Tričkovska, Marina Vukadinović, László Patócs, lead by: Marko Čudić), followed by a French one (Hélène Bertrand, Anna Carroy, Laurence Dulieu, Anne-Marie Diascorne, Gabriel Stollsteiner, Bérengère Vogel, lead by Ágnes Járfás). These workshops aim to help younger translators to get involved into literary translation. We prepared an analysis comparing the average age of translators in years 2010 and 2013. This shows the average age of professional literary translators decreased from 55 to 45 while the average age of workshop participants decreased from 36 to 34. Many workshop participants returned as individual translations, like Sandra Buljanović (translating to Serbian), Sergio de la Ossa (Galego), Viktorija Santic (Croatian), Andrei Dósa and Ingrid Tomanicska (Romanian), Milosz Waligórszki (Polish), Xi Jiayou (Chinese), Péter Bognár (German) and others.
On the 26th of April, our Foundation was awarded The Milenium prize of the National Intellectual Property Institute. The president of the institute praised our Foundation for helping to preserve and create intellectual property.
In May the Library of the National Academy of Science donated 13 reference works to our library – many thanks for this. May is traditionally the month for the Finnish (Aho Tarja, Asp Helinä, Silván Marjo, Hynynen Tapani, Ohenoja Janne, Sinnemäki Jukka, lead by Johanna Raimi and Tuomo Lahdelma; guest speakars: Gábor Újváry, István Monok, János Géczi) and Slovakian Workshops ( JuditGörözdi, Jana Cviková, Lilla Bolemant, András Mészáros, Jitka Rožňová, Lucia Satinská, Eva Andrejčáková, Vlado Janček, Gertrúd Korpič, Lívia Pászmár, Gabi Magová, Renata Deáková, guest: Anna Gács).
In cooperation with the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Bucharest and the Romanian Cultural Institute we secured funding fort eh travel cost of the Romanian translators' workshop from the Romanian party. The funds arrived just in time for the workshop in September, and in the spring of 2015 we will be hsoting another Romanian workshop – The Chinese director of the Confucius Institute in Szeged, Zhang Xuemei visited the House to discuss further cooperation.
In early June we hosted the ELTE translators' Workshop. - On the 11th June we had guests from the Iberian peninsula (translators to Catalan, Portugese, Basque this year lead by João Henriques ), followed by the Czech workshop starting on the 16th (Honti Eszter, Lucie Málková, Alžběta Vaculíková, Lenka Kubelová, Tomáš Vašut, Jiří Zeman), starting on the 23th we hosted the Spanish workshop for the 11th time, (Andrés Cienfuegos, Judit Faller, Eszter Orbán, Sergio de la Ossa, Mária Szijj, Márta Pávai Patak, Major Veronika, lead by Adan Kovacsics) with translators taking over the whole house.
The garden party has now matured into a veritable art festival. We presented literary translation: 24 translators (among them students from the Balassi Institute) read their works from the 13th volume of the Füredi Fordítói Füzetek (an extract from the novel A harmadik híd by László Szilasi, also read in Hungarian by the author); we hosted an art exhibition titled Áttörés showing the drawings of Erika Baglyas (opened by the poet Zoltán Pallag); the theater group Csütörtök Társulat (lead by Nóra Hidvégi and Judit Garai) returned once again for a performance; the musicians of the Snétberger Music Talent Center played for our guests. The House as allways is hosting an exhibition of contemporary works of art on loan (see our homepage for a list of names). The exhibition was curated by the art historian Kovalovszky Márta, the people from the Writers Workshop helped us prepare everything, and Péter Bozsik and Márta Józsa cooked for us. City mayor István Bóka gave the opening speech, sharing the good news of having founded the Sava Babić prize for young translators to Serbian, in cooperation with the Hungarian Department of the Belgrade University. For photos, see our homepage: www.fordítohaz.hu. - We also have a facebook page now www.facebook.com/forditohaz, administered by Júlia Rácz, our social media manager. - In September we hosted our 2nd Romanian workshop, (Bara Hajnal, Gabriela Constantin, Andrei Dosa, Julia Grigore, Nagy Eszter, Tomanicska Ingrid, George Volceanov), folowed by the Catalan (Montserrat Bayà, Ignasi Farinyes, Carles Bartual, Nemes Krisztina, Smid Bernadett, Bakucz Dóra), and the 2nd Japanese Workshop (Ishikawa Naho, Shimizu Takako, Endo Ayama, Umemoto Takehiro, Ito Ami, lead by: Waseda Mika). Miklós Benedek (Serbia) the winner of the translation competition hosted by the Országos Idegennyelvű Könyvtár spent a week in the house.
We received additional funding from the Ministry of Human Recources, so we could host a long overdue conference for translators. This time we invited translators who have been working on the book Paralel Stories by Péter Nádas. Nine translators arrived for the event: Christina Virágh, Marc Martin, Xenia Detoni, Görözdi Judit (she talked about the reception of Julianna Szolnokiová's translation), Kari Kemény (sent us her talk), Ove Lund, Yu Ze Min, Adan Kovacsics, Marjanca Mihelic, Anamaria Pop. Zsolt Bagi, Péter Bodor and Viktória Radics also gave talks at the conference. On the second day we hosted a discussion between the literary historian Csaba Károlyi and Péter Nádas, moderated by Dávid Szolláth. The talks can be read on our homepage. One of the participants had the following to say about the two days event: „I took part at the event as a reader of Nádas' work, and have been captured by the cozy openness of the whole event, everybody was very kind and accessible, the most unexpected thing for me was the fundamental curiosity of the participants. Here they were all experts of Nádas' work, serious literary scholars, all of them manifesting a childlike insatiable wish for knowledge. The were interested in each-other, Nádas' book, and the capabilities of the different languages. Peter Nádas may also have been touched by this great open empathy, because in the closing discussion he talked in a very earnest way, with a great deal of self-irony, and of course in a very clever and exact manner, earnestly trying to answer all the questions, many of which verged on the intimate.”. - We had another new initiative for 2014: we organized a contest for people interested in literary translation under 45. The contest concluded with a workshop held between the 16th and 23th of November, with nine participants (Sophia Matteikat, Leonora Lychko, Jasmina Kretic, Monika Galabova, Sandra Rétháti, Magdaléna Garbacik-Balakowicz, Joanna Nowostawska-Gyalókay, Katja Path, Mustafa Savoglu) translating into German, Russian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Austrian, Polish, and Turkish. Their work was commented on and criticized, they worked on several texts while at the House, and listened to talks by: Zsófia Szilágyi, Dénes Krusovszky, Csaba Károlyi, Gábor Schein, Liza Sochivko and Cora-Lisa Sütö. The visit of the Balassi Institute students concluded the years' work. They visited the House to get acquainted with the location and the library.
Kinga Szokács continued to prepare extracts from our literary journals throughout the year to aid our translators; these can be found in the house as well as online.
Our caretaker Zsuzsa Bocsor Mrs. Szamosfalvi once again did a splendid job all through the year, the guests were delighted.
Prizes: Mari Alföldy was awarded one of the most prestigious Dutch trnaslators prizes for translating Sátántangó by László Krasznahorkai (Filter Vertaalprijs). - Robert Svoboda was awarded two prizes for translating Harmonia Caelestis by Péter Esterházy into Czech: in April he got the Magnesia Litera-prize for the best translation of the previous year, and in October he received the Josef Jungman prize, the biggest accolade of the Czech Society for Literary Translators.

Scholarship: translators can apply at The Hungarian Translators House Foundation with project plans of translating Hungarian literature or works in the field of social sciences. Candidates should submit a project plan with the work to be translated, their CV’s, a list of their publications and, if possible, a publisher’s contract. The scholarship is 120.000 HUF per month. The duration of the scholarship is 2-4-6-8 weeks.
